Accomodations
Together with our families, we will stay in two homes on the North Shore from May 29 through June 5, 2006: the "Piliana Beach House," in Anahola and "Keoniana Kai," in Princeville.

We recommend renting a house or condo, especially if you can share a place with friends. Our travel agent, Laurel Kinney, lives in Kauai and is happy to help you make your arrangements (remember to tell her that you are with us).

Travel
Air - Lihue (LIH) is the main airport on Kauai. You'll find direct flights to Lihue and flights through Honolulu (HNL). If you plan to travel to other islands, you may want to fly to HNL, then book your flight to Kauai separately.

• Travel from the east coast to Kauai takes ~11-16 hours. If you leave the east coast in the morning , you’ll arrive in Lihue that same afternoon or evening, local time (Hawaii is 6 hrs behind Eastern Standard Time). When you return, you’ll probably arrive on the day AFTER you left. Since flying to Hawaii is a major trip, try to stay at least a week!
• The best way to shop for airline tickets on online sites like travelocity or expedia. Recently, airfares from GSO, RDU or CLT to HNL have been around $600-700. You will find better rates if your stay includes a Saturday or if you fly on a weekday (esp Mon/Tues). Flights from HNL to LIH and the other islands are typically $160 (or ~$70 for one-way tickets).

• American Airlines offers flexible travel and competitive prices. Other airlines offer the 5% group discount but require that the group travel on the same flights and often pay an advanced deposit. If you prefer to fly on another airline AND are in a group of 10 or more taking the SAME flight, please visit the airline's website to inquire about the terms of their group rates.

Land - There's a lot to explore on Kauai, so you’ll definitely need a car! To get a 5-25% discount on car rentals through Avis, use our code D005243 (note: both 0's are zeros!). Reservations can be made over the phone (1-800-331-1600) or at www.avis.com.

Car rental on the island is pretty reasonable (~$25-30 per day). However, if you want to save money, consider sharing a car with another person or couple.
